GE Cafe : CGS980SEMSS 30in Free Standing Gas Range with 5 Sealed Burners
Customer Reviews
A not up to par stoveThis is not a very honest stove. The burners are way too big and most of the heat goes up the sides of the pot causing scorching. A full pot takes forever to tension up since most of the heat goes up and around the pot; even 10" and 12" pots.
The oven has an annoying fan that blows hot air through vents in the back. Draw a blank trying to use the oven on a summer day; the kitchen heats up beyond what the A/C can keep up with. Don't try to bake bread. Most recipes for rustic currency require steam by throwing water in a hot pan on the bottom. However, the fan blows the steam out of the oven and into the kitchen.
The oven has a temperature of which is supposed to tell the oven temperature. It only does this while the oven is heating up. Once the oven reaches the set temperature, only the set temperature is indicated. If the entrance way is opened and the oven cools, the indicator will still only register the set temperature. If the oven cools, the only way to skilled in the temperature is by turning the oven off and then restarting. It will then show the actual temperature until the set temperature is again reached. If you privation to lower the temperature, it will only show the new set tempearature.
It has a center burner and a griddle that fits over it. However, even on the highest scene, the griddle will not get hot enough to make pancakes.
The knobs are poorly made and break easily.
Postives:
Agreeable to clean and it looks nice.
Looks grand, but slightly disappointed
I purchased this latitude along with the Cafe microwave and dishwasher over 2 years ago. They look great! I love the range because of the reckon stainless steel look. It looks like a professional gas stove but without the price.
Pros:
1. Cut oven. The lower oven, at first, looks to be just a warming drawer. But it will go up to 450 degrees and let you absolutely cook additional items down there. This is great for big meals around the holidays.
2. Easy cleaning. Yes, it's stainless blade so you'll have to suffer through the polishing, but the cooktop is very easy to clean. Just pull the grates off and wipe it down.
3. Looks important! It looks really high-end and professional in my loft. I get compliments on it all the time.
4. Large oven. Compared to other gas ranges, this oven is a excellent size.
Cons:
1. Three burners are almost useless. The only burner I actually use all the time is the lower fist one. It sits higher up than the rest and it's a larger burner. The lower right burner is also eminently, but it sits lower so it takes a lot longer to get to a boil. I usually use this one for large frying pans, not for pots. This burner also goes from HI to LOW with no in between. I don't be familiar with if it's just mine, but I know I've read other reviews that say the same. The most useless thing about this stove is the two small burners in the back. Why in the excellent would they put them in the back? There's no way to reach them if you have large pots sitting on the large front burners. And these burners sit lower as well, so in reality cooking anything on them is futile. I think I used one of them once.
2. If you have the Cafe microwave above this stove, keep some potholders or towels accessible. The handle on the microwave is stainless steel so if you have something cooking on the stove, it heats that handle up to torrid. I believe that the heat from the stove is also slowly ruining the touch-screen display on the microwave.
3. Knobs. The knobs on the front are persuasible, although they look stainless steel. I didn't realize this until I got it home. It wasn't a big deal at first because they do in actuality look nice, and hey, less SS to polish! But because of the heat, over time they knobs have chipped. I saw someone review that they called GE and got new stainless knobs (which, I shot in the dark they're using now?) but I've had mine for over 2 years and don't know if this is an option.
4. Griddle. The middle burner is pretty much only enthusiastic for using with the griddle. You can't actually cook anything on it as if it were another burner (not that the other burners work that great, either). I've tolerant of it a couple of times with the griddle for pancakes and besides taking a long time to heat up, it did an ok job. I'm not certain why they didn't make this burner have a wider range of heat adjustment. There's no way I could ever grill anything on it like core or a sandwich. It would take forever.
Overall, I still like it. I'm only cooking for one and I don't cook a lot. I got this set because of how it looked and it definitely looks ethical. But if I had to cook on this thing for a family, it's just not practical. I don't think it's worth the high payment tag for how it functions.
This is THE Stove for a Newfangled Kitchen
I searched for a match up of months looking for the right stove for our newly remodeled kitchen and we decided on the GE Cafe gas organize. This stove is the flagship appliance for GE's Cafe line and they did not hold anything back with it. We have owned the stove for 3 weeks now and have old virtually every feature on it and it has passed with flying colors.
The materials of the stove are top notch. I have look over some reviews about melting and overheated knobs, but the ones that came on my April 2010 stove are metal with no overheating issues.
The griddle that comes with it is very composed, although you would not want to use it to cook anything that can splash like bacon as it is very messy. Stick with pancakes.
The electronic in check panel for the stove is very intuitive and user friendly. Most people will be able to start using it well away without needing to read the manual as everything works the way you think it would.
A couple of other features that are affecting is the meat probe that allows you to cook to internal temp on meats which works VERY well and the portable for the over. I know this sounds stupid, but you can see inside the stove very well without having to open the door. This is very another from the GE Profile stove I replace.
My only frustration with the stove is you have to convert it to LP if natural gas is not available in your acreage and they make it such that you pretty much have to have the gas company do it. That added another $100 to my costs but it was still worth it. (It would be critical if appliance manufacturers made this easy enough so Joe Homeowner could do it, but on the other hand they probably don't want Joe Homeowner messing with gas!) The gas suite will also adjust the burners to make sure they are properly regulated, which could resolve some issues other users were having.
If you are looking for a very serviceable stove that is sure to catch people's eye this is the stove for you.
Usefulness but knobs will crack
Have had the stove for two years and fondness it, BUT the end of all of the knobs have cracked. One of them cracked and expanded getting stuck inside the stove (gas was operation and could not turn it off until we unscrewed the stove to get the knob out and use another knob to turn gas off). GE sent me new knobs with no defence but Im guessing they will crack again. By the way, I only use high heat (over 400) about six times a year and have never used the self organization (super high heat) feature. I suggest taking the knobs out when you clean the stove or use exceedingly high heat or broil).
Urge I didn't buy it!
I have owned this oven for about 2 years now and I actually wish I purchased another. It does have it good points, but I find myself more frustrated with it as time goes on.
They put two in a body burners in the front and two small in the back. Well, when I have two large pots going on the front it's almost impossible to reach over them and use the two smaller burners in the back. Mine is useful to propane so I don't know if that makes a difference, but the flame adjustment is just terrible...they all seem to fancy to burn on high...even when I turn the knobs to the lowest settings it's still to high, and yet the center burner never seems to go to that enormous setting? The front right is a simmer burner, but when I lower it to simmer I get a black buildup of soot and it start to give off a propane foetor so I can never seem to use it for simmering anything. The front left burner does do a great job of boiling water very fast though. If the oven is on the give vent to fan will start blowing on the two burner on the right side and has blown them out on occasion, only the smell of gas alerted me to this. The blowing heartthrob makes simmering anything impossible....even if I could simmer!
I recently noticed my knobs are all wrinkled and fine underneath..never noticed it before, but the knobs do get hot when the oven is on. I have read other reviews about people having them decline, so my problem is probably also from the heat. I have just contacted GE about this so I'll let you know if their customer service will stomach behind their product or not. The knobs are really cheap for the high price of this stove.
I used to convection oven maybe 8 times and have since set up. It takes TWICE as long for anything to cook when I try and use it. I really wish they made an oven without the convection...I at the end of the day didn't want it in the first place and had to pay hundreds extra for it because this was not an option.
I do love the look of this oven, the stove top grates are worthy and thick and I wanted the five burners, but I do not feel this oven lives up to the cost or high quality standards.
Update: Consumer service did respond quickly to my complaint about the melting knobs. They sent me out replacements and a substitute alternatively of plastic they are now using stainless steel as the standard, so I assume this was a frequent problem. The skirt that goes behind the knobs is still inexperienced though.
