3rings » Electrolux's Bifoliate Dishwasher Incites A+D Debate
The results were innovative, to say the least, including the downright zany: “some pretty far-out ideas like robotic kitchen assistants, teleport fridges, kitchen units with holographic technology, 3D food printers, and greenhouses that walk on Mars.”
The problem has been that many of the 25 finalists competing for first place do not have designs grounded in science—in other words, they’re ideas not capable of being translated into prototypes (at least not using today’s physics). And this has really gotten lots of designers—many of whom entered the competition with executable products—hot under the collar! The winner will be chosen from a group of eight finalists on September 24, 2009 at 100% Design London , the UK’s premier A+D event. Let’s hope there isn’t an uprising of angry (but practical) designers!
One of the 25 finalists, the Bifoliate Dishwasher has already earned a good bit of buzz, even though there is limited information on the design or the designer. Here’s what we know: this clever, space-saving, wall-mounted dual dishwasher “allows the user to put dirty dishes in one compartment and use the other as a shelf for clean dishes.” But how does it work? The simple answer is we don’t know. As an entry in Electrolux’s Design Lab 2009, Bifoliate comes with limited information (but snazzy renderings). What we also know: designer Brundzaite hails from the Vinius Academy of Art in Lithuania. The last of what we know: the dishwasher should be more efficient and eco-friendly than current dishwashers on the market because it’s meant to use ultrasonic wave technology to clean the dishes. One thing is for sure. Brundzaite’s idea answers a real need: many people unload dishwashers only when they have no choice—because they need to reload. With a dual-action dishwasher, one side can be dirty while the other is clean. It’s such a neat concept—close the door on the dirty or mid-loaded side to hide the culinary carnage—that it makes procrastination null and void. And the design is great too, with its sleek symmetry and central hub. It’s sure to satisfy everyone’s need for balance.

Radhika, I don’t mean to be critical but your description doesn’t convey the theory of the design that well IMO. The reader is construed, by thinking you still need to switch the dishes from one side to the other to get a total clean. From reading the designers description and from first impression of the product: I think you load the dirty dishes into one side and take fresh dishes from the other. One side is always acting as a shelf; Once all the clean dishes have been taken from the shelf (used), insert all dirty dishes back to that same shelf and rotate the door. Then hey presto you got your new dishes from the other side while the others get washed. This would made more sense.
Sorry I need to correct myself - it does use some water spray at start of cycle - just to looseen food i guess. As it is only a concept I’m sure seals and such would be incorporated if required - and re pretty picture, that’s exactly what concepts are, whether architecture , industrial design whatever, it’s all about engaging the viewer or client to get the juices flowing so to speak. Although concepts are generally based on possibilities the actual development to a finished product results in often many additions, changes etc.

Electrolux EIDW6405GT Dishwasher | Energy Efficent Dishwasher
The Electrolux Dishwasher EIDW6405GT is an energy efficient appliance that has earned the Energy Star rating. Energy Star is a government backed program aimed to help us protect the environment through energy efficient products and help us save money in the process. There are strict energy guidelines that products have to meet in order to earn the Energy Star rating and the EIDW6405GT has met those guidelines.
When shopping for a dishwasher most of us probably aren’t thinking about the amount of energy it takes to operate the appliance. However, if we started thinking about that energy consumption in terms of dollars we would save, we might be more likely to search for an energy efficient model. Water heating represents between thirteen and seventeen percent of residential energy consumption, which makes it the third largest energy use in homes behind heating and cooling. About 60% of the energy used by a dishwasher goes towards heating the water, so models that use less water use less energy, and save money. The Electrolux EIDW6405GT is a dishwasher that does just that.
Significant savings can result by minimizing the amount of hot water needed. Dishwashers use a built in heater system to heat the water so it can clean effectively. This Electrolux dishwasher minimizes the amount of water needed, therefore saving the energy required heat it. This new dishwasher is a top of the line item that just became available early this year.
